Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was in television shows in the role of Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in her role on the ABC comedy Roseanne. However, her parents did not want her to pursue acting until she became older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry was shy during high school and was not a performer. She began acting at Northwestern University to gain friends when she moved to the university from Boston University. Perry started her acting career with New York after graduation, getting small parts on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as a stage actress. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. The show featured her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of The Family, an ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, she played a recurring role on her own ABC Political thriller Scandal which starred her father. The character she played was a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off episode that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. She got the part through an open audition despite being connected to the character.
